If you enjoyed the heroine of this tale, you’re in luck, as she is the Spiritualist, psychically inclined and beautifully haunted matriarch of three of my Gothic gaslamp fantasy series. Evelyn Northe first appears in my Magic Most Foul trilogy, beginning with Darker Still. She continues through that trilogy, then plays a starring role in the Eterna Files trilogy and is the beloved “Gran” to Eve Whitby, the woman she is writing this account for, in the Spectral City series.

Evelyn came to my mind and heart as an adult. Her not wanting to tell this story to me, or to anyone, meant her youth and early days were entirely blocked to me until a moment during the Spectral City when a woman is about to be taken away to an institution against her will. Evelyn’s reaction against that illuminated these events for me, in a glaring, terrible lightning strike into pitch darkness. I understood with solemn clarity why she fights so hard for women’s agency and independence.

I am driven to write historical narratives because strong women aren’t a new invention; fighting fiercely for one’s own safety and sanctity is a tale as old as time. I involve spirits and Sensitives, as the history of Spiritualism is directly entwined with women’s rights, suffrage and autonomy. We must never take for granted ground that has been gained, as we must continue to do all we can to fight for, strengthen and broaden all women’s rights.

I hope readers who connect with Evelyn will join me and live into this woman’s glory and mentorship; she is my Northe star, after all, and I have been guided by her light for most of my career.
